Can you use water shoes for parkour?

Introduction

Parkour, the adrenaline-filled sport that took the internet by storm over a decade ago has always been an exciting (and gut-wrenching) thing to watch. If you’re someone who wants to take a piece of this fast paced pie, you’re going to want to get a shoe that can handle it! Instead of spending money on a brand new shoe, you might just want to use your water shoes for parkour. After all, they’ve got the grip, don’t they? But are water shoes good for parkour? Or are you setting yourself up for injury? We’ll discover this in today’s article. Let’s jump in!

What is parkour?

Parkour is a non-competitive sport that involves a person going through obstacles to get from one place to another. In a nutshell, parkour is the art of fluidly getting from point A to B as fast as possible. While getting there, you can run, jump, climb, vault, or roll to complete your objective! You just have to make it quick and keep it as efficient as possible.

Fun Fact: Parkour was invented by David Belle in France in the late 80s and early 90s, who developed it with the help of his friends!.

You might ask yourself, what even is the point of parkour? Good question! While of course, you have to get to your destination quickly, but a very important point here is that you have to do it fluidly. This means that you have to maintain a certain flow when you’re jumping and rolling your way through your path. Your movements can’t seem jittery or choppy, you have to cleverly go with the flow. To be good at parkour, you don’t just need a fit body, but you also need a sharp mind and the ability to make quick decisions in the blink of an eye.

How long will it take for me to learn parkour?

Well, since there aren’t a lot of rules to parkour except getting there fast and fluidly, you can learn the basics pretty easily. However, to get good at it like the pros, it will take you a lot of time, effort and epic fails, which could be anywhere between 2 to 3 years. The great thing about parkour is that you can mix and match multiple techniques to make it as complex or as simple as you require!

Are water shoes good for parkour?

So, are water shoes good for parkour? As you’ll read in a bit, the requirements for a good parkour shoe and the qualities of most water shoes do seem to line up pretty well.

What kind of shoes should you wear for parkour?

An important step (pun intended) in your parkour journey is buying the right shoe. While it’s about the skill more than the gear, sometimes, however the difference between a dangerous fall and an awesome landing might just be your shoes.

When looking for a parkour shoe, there are really only a handful of important things to keep in mind. Grip, flexibility, comfort and fit.

Shoes for parkour should have a solid rubber role on the bottom with really shallow to no grooves. The problem with deeper grooves is that they can chip away after a few rough landings. Remember, in parkour, grip is everything.

Next, we have the flexibility that a shoe should provide. Your feet should be able to move around naturally and your shoes should not restrict your feet’s movement. This will strengthen the right muscles in your feet and you will form a better connection with them that will help you do better.

Lastly, we have comfort and fit, which are both equally important. You want your shoe to stay on you while you’re doing all those cool tricks, right? Your shoes should fit your feet but you should also have just a little wiggle room to make it comfortable for you while parkouring.

Conclusion

To conclude, all of this makes us think that water shoes just might be good parkour shoes (as long as they don’t have thick soles and a deep groove). However, it’s best if you try on multiple types of shoes to see which one(s) works the best for you! What do you think, are water shoes good for parkour?
